Chianti Abbey

For 1.000 years Chianti Abbey has been an important farm and its land has been producing excellent wines and oils. A visit is to experience and understand fine local foods and wines. It means spending a holiday in a villa that was previously a monastery, situated in an expansive landscape, rich in symbolism and at the same time, quiet and intimate.
The Abbey, a charming destination on the hillside of the Monti del Chianti, is reached via roads filled with special emotions.

In 1051 the monks of the Vallombrosan Order, a Tuscan reform of the Benedictines, founded the Abbey and began planting the first vineyards in the Upper Chianti area. Over the centuries, they extended their vast land holdings to include many thousands of acres and developed a flourishing wine production and commerce. 800 acres of woods with trails, allow invigorating walks in a picturesque location.

At the Abbey you can say “I do” in the amazing Italian garden or the courtyard!

With a short drive, you can reach the villages of Radda, Gaiole, Castellina, Panzano, Greve and other Chianti castles. The wine and olive oil production are an important part of the estate. In the undergrounds, you can find the ancient cellar (wines from 1932) that leads you to the Italian garden.

The production of wines dates to the eleventh century and was in the middle age a feudal agricultural centre, with its popular products on the local market in the town of Greve. You can still recognize the old hamlet’s structure: the landlord’s villa with its Italian garden, the peasants' houses that surround the little square, the small church, the old warehouse and historic wine cellar; fascinating!

You can visit the historical (1000 years old) cellars one of the best collections of Tuscan red wines, Chianti Classico DOCG, Reserve, olive oil and grappa together with pinot grigio, pinot noir, chardonnay, prosecco, Raboso and Agricanto from the seals located in the areas most favourable to viticulture in northern Italy where the owners also produce wine.

The abbey-renewed restaurant is run by the owners, enriching your stay with delicious recipes. After a swim in the pool and a visit in the garden, you can enter the secret rooms of the monks, nowadays a well-preserved library.
